Looking Forward: The Future of Nibbles

First and foremost, thank you. To every supporter, old and new — you have made Nibbles’ future possible. Because of you, we can look ahead with hope and determination, secure in the knowledge that Nibbles will continue into 2026 and beyond. Together, we’ve turned uncertainty into opportunity, and now it’s time to focus on what comes next.

It’s an exciting moment: we’re laying the groundwork not just for survival, but for real growth and change — for the centre, for our organisation, and for rabbit welfare across Wales.

Immediate Focus: Building Strong Foundations

Behind the scenes, we’ve been strengthening the foundations of Nibbles as an organisation. Much of this vital work is nearly complete, leaving us more resilient and better equipped for the future.

At the centre, the three rabbit units we’ve been able to reopen are already reserved for rabbits in urgent need — soon, they’ll be starting their new chapter with us. A few minor repairs are on our to-do list, and while the wet West Wales weather means larger projects will have to wait until 2026, the animals already waiting for help won’t have to wait much longer.

One of our first priorities for 2026 is to begin seeking funding to repair and renovate our rodent cabin. This will not only save the existing structure, but also move us closer to reopening for a limited number of rodents once again. The cabin was closed at the end of June 2023, when urgent repairs were needed and the loss of a part-time staff member meant we no longer had the funding or on-site capacity to keep it running safely. Rebuilding the cabin is an important step in restoring Nibbles’ ability to offer specialist care to rodents in need.

Next Steps: Campaigning for Change

This winter, we’re turning our attention to welfare work and campaigning. We’ve already raised our concerns with the Welsh Government about the lack of protection for rabbits — but their response was deeply disappointing. We believe these animals deserve far better, and we won’t stop until they’re treated with the same seriousness as cats and dogs.

That’s why our next big step is to launch a public campaign, calling for change. We know our supporters will once again stand shoulder to shoulder with us as we fight for these forgotten animals. Alongside this, we’ll continue building the welfare section of our website, creating a trusted hub of reliable care advice for rabbit and rodent owners everywhere.

This empty space once held one of our earliest rabbit enclosures — a second-hand unit kindly donated to Nibbles in our early years. By the summer of 2023, it had sadly rotted beyond safe repair and had to be dismantled. Our goal has always been to replace it with a new, bigger, and better enclosure: a permanent home for two of our sanctuary rabbits, offering them a safe and enriching space. Just as importantly, it would serve as a real-life example of welfare-driven rabbit housing for visitors to see. In 2026, we will begin seeking funding to finally make this long-held plan a reality.

Short to Medium Term: Growing and Rebuilding

Looking further ahead, we’re excited to bring more of the centre back to life. Our goals include:

  • Fully repairing existing rabbit housing.

  • Restoring and reopening the rodent cabin.

  • Creating dedicated homes for sanctuary rabbits.

  • Making improvements that support both the animals and our hardworking team.

These aren’t just repairs — they’re steps towards giving more animals the safety, care, and second chances they deserve.

Our old tin shed was destroyed during a storm in November 2024, leaving us without a vital structure that once housed all our day-to-day essentials — from open bales of bedding to hay and other supplies needed to care for the rabbits. With so much uncertainty over the past year, we haven’t yet been able to replace it. As we move forward, we’ll be looking to purchase a new shed as soon as possible. It may be a little while before we can get it up with the wet winter weather now setting in, but we’re hopeful for a run of dry days in the not-too-distant future.

Long-Term Goals: A Brighter Future

Our vision is bold: a fully reopened rescue, supporting 60–70 rabbits and rodents at any one time, while also driving forward welfare change nationally. To get there, we need to grow our monthly funding:

  • £3,500/month will allow us to reopen more rabbit housing and offer places for a limited number of rodents.

  • £5,000/month will allow Nibbles to fully reopen at full capacity.

It’s an ambitious goal — but with the same determination and community spirit that has already brought us this far, we believe it’s achievable.

This area once held another of our early rabbit enclosures — like several others, it was donated second-hand in Nibbles’ first years. By 2023, the structure had deteriorated beyond safe repair and had to be taken down. Looking ahead, our vision is to create a brand-new enclosure here: a safe, enriching, and permanent space for sanctuary rabbits who will remain in our care for life. Just as importantly, it will stand as a clear example of what welfare-driven rabbit housing should look like. Securing funding for this project is a key goal for 2026, helping us turn this empty space into a home that truly reflects the standards all rabbits deserve.

Together Into the Future

The journey ahead is filled with possibilities. We’re excited, determined, and ready to take Nibbles into its next chapter.

Thanks to you, we have this opportunity — and it’s one we don’t take lightly. Every pledge, every word of encouragement, every bit of support has given us the chance to look forward instead of wondering if we’d have a future at all. That is an incredible gift, and we are committed to making the very most of it.

Moving Nibbles forward means so much more than keeping our doors open. It means working towards lasting change for rabbits and rodents — improving welfare standards, growing our rescue capacity, and building a stronger voice for these forgotten animals. It means turning hope into action, and action into real results that will make a difference for years to come.

We know the road ahead will take determination, hard work, and continued support. But with this community by our side, we’re confident we can achieve our goals and make a brighter, fairer future for the animals who need us most.

Above all else, we are so grateful for the opportunity to continue our work — to still be here for rabbits like Ethel and Edgar when they need us most. Their stories remind us why Nibbles exists, and why your support means everything. Together, we are giving rabbits and rodents a future.

Here’s to the next chapter of Nibbles — and to everything we can achieve together. Stay tuned as we continue to share updates on our plans, our upcoming campaign, and all the ways you can get involved in making real and lasting change for these animals.
